More Than Popcorn: Why We Kept This Business Going
Sometimes a business is more than a business. Sometimes, it's part of a community.
For me, that realization started on the sidelines of a soccer field.
As a soccer booster mom, I helped run a popcorn fundraiser for our team. Year after year, the fundraiser brought delicious popcorn from a small local business into the homes of families throughout our community while raising significant money for the team.
It worked.
And more importantly, people enjoyed being part of it.
So when I heard that the business was going up for sale, I knew what it could mean if it left our community.
I couldn't let that happen.
Keeping Something Good in Our Community
With my background in business education and two children of my own, I've always believed that young people need opportunities to learn, earn, and grow.
But I also believe they deserve to still be kids.
Too many jobs can make teenagers feel like they have to choose between work and the activities that are important to them, whether that's sports, school, family, or simply having time to enjoy being young.
That never sat right with me.
This business offered a different possibility.
So I made the decision to keep it here, in our community, and grow it into something even more meaningful.
A Business Built Around Young People
Today, creating opportunities for students is at the center of what we do.
Our students aren't simply employees. They're gaining experience that can help prepare them for whatever comes next.
Through their work, they have opportunities to develop:
Responsibility
Teamwork
Communication
Time management
Confidence
Real-world work experience
They're learning what it means to show up, contribute, work with others, take pride in what they do, and be part of something bigger than themselves.
And we're intentional about creating flexibility so they can continue being involved in the sports, school activities, family commitments, and other parts of life that matter to them.
And Yes, We're Still Making Delicious Popcorn
Of course, popcorn is still at the heart of everything we do.
We continue to make our popcorn in small batches with care, creating a product that customers can enjoy at home, at events, through fundraisers, and throughout our local communities.
But what matters most to me is what each bag represents.
When you support The Sweet Life Kettle Corn Company, you're not simply buying a bag of popcorn.
You're supporting a small Maine business and helping create opportunities for local students.
Popcorn With a Purpose
Every bag can represent something bigger.
When you support our business, you're helping local students:
Stay involved in the activities they love
Build confidence and real-world skills
Earn money while balancing school and life
Gain valuable work experience
Be part of something rooted in the rural community of western Maine
That's what makes this Popcorn with a Purpose.
Why Your Support Matters
Small businesses are part of what makes local communities unique.
When you choose to support a local business, you're helping keep money and opportunities within the community. You're also helping businesses like ours continue creating experiences and opportunities that reach beyond the product itself.
For us, that means giving young people a chance to learn, contribute, earn, and grow.
It means keeping something valuable right here in western Maine.
And it means continuing a story that began with a simple popcorn fundraiser on the sidelines of a soccer field.
This Business Stayed Right Where It Belongs
This business could have gone somewhere else.
Instead, it stayed right where it belongs.
Right here in our community.
And with your support, The Sweet Life Kettle Corn Company can continue creating opportunities for the next generation, one batch at a time.
Thank you for supporting our small business.
